Ayurveda does not treat mental and physical health as separate departments. Stress and anxiety are primarily associated with an imbalance of Vata Dosha, which can disturb the Manas (mind) and affect emotional stability.

The connection runs in both directions. Long-term stress may weaken Agni, contribute to the formation of Ama, and over time affect physical health — which is why prolonged stress is linked with concerns such as disturbed sleep, acidity and IBS-type symptoms.

An Ayurvedic assessment for stress looks at constitution, current imbalance, lifestyle, sleep pattern, diet and the specific triggers involved. From there, a plan may draw on dietary guidance, Ayurvedic medicines, lifestyle and routine changes, meditation and breathing practice.

None of this replaces mental health care where that is needed. Where a person is significantly affected in daily functioning, professional mental health support should continue alongside any Ayurvedic plan.
